Luxury in the Wild: Finding Peace at Le Jardin du Roy - When I first arrived at Le Jardin du Roy, I didn’t expect to be so taken aback — not just by the hotel, but by how seamlessly it blends into... read more the wild sandstone landscape of Isalo. It’s not just near nature; it is nature. The whole place feels carved out of the cliffs.
Le Jardin du Roy wasn’t just a hotel — it was one of the highlights of my trip. It's the kind of place that reminds you why you travel: not just to see new things, but to feel different while you’re seeing them. It’s quiet luxury, tuned into its environment, and full of tiny moments that stay with you long after you’ve left.
If you’re going to Madagascar and want to experience Isalo in a way that’s immersive but still deeply comfortable, I can’t recommend this place enough.
Our bungalow felt like a peaceful retreat. Inside, it was simple but elegant: clean lines, natural textures, and a massive bed with crisp white sheets. There was a little terrace where I’d sit in the late afternoons, drink in hand, watching the shadows stretch across the rocks. I loved how quiet it was — no buzz of electricity, no sound of cars, just the occasional cry of a bird or lemur in the distance.
The shower had hot water (reliable, thankfully!), and while Wi-Fi was only in the main lodge area, I honestly didn’t miss being connected. It felt good to disconnect.
I wasn’t expecting the food to be this good, honestly. Every evening, the restaurant put together a 3-course menu — beautifully presented, generous portions, and full of flavour. One night I had a zebu steak that was perfectly grilled, the next, fresh fish with a vanilla sauce that reminded me I was still on an island.
Breakfasts were peaceful affairs, with fresh fruit, homemade bread, Malagasy honey, and eggs cooked how I liked. They even made me strong Malagasy coffee — a little bitter, a little smoky, and totally addictive.

For me it deserves 5 stars! - Le Jardin du Roy was our absolute favourite hotel on our two-week tour of Madagascar. The room was romantically decorated and large. The only flaw was the separate toilet without... read more sink, so you always had to walk around the room to wash your hands in the bathroom. The entire hotel complex was simply unique, as was the pool. The food in the restaurant was very upscale and had European prices. However, our travel agency booked half board for us, so the 3-course dinner was included in the evening. Also the staff were all super nice. We felt very comfortable there and would have liked to stay even longer. For me, it's a five-star hotel.
